Sebenzile Lofts Brings New Life to Katlehong Through Affordable, Dignified Housing

In another step toward township renewal and inclusive urban growth, Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, together with the CEO of the Gauteng Partnership Fund (GPF), Lindiwe Kwele, officially launched Sebenzile Lofts in Katlehong on Thursday, 29 January 2026.

Sebenzile Lofts offers 21 secure, modern rental units for households earning below R22, 000 per month. The development is within walking distance of Letsoho Mall, Natalspruit Hospital, transport facilities, schools and places of worship — easing financial pressures and improving daily mobility for working families.

Speaking at the launch, MEC Motara described the project as a powerful demonstration of partnership-driven progress: This development is a powerful example of what can be achieved when government and its partners work together with a shared commitment to restoring dignity through housing.”

She reaffirmed the province’s dedication to working families, young professionals and community members who need safe, well‑located rental options, commending the GPF for its continued leadership in enabling affordable housing delivery.

Kwele highlighted the broader economic and developmental impact of the project: “We are sending a clear message to the market: townships are viable, bankable and sustainable real estate investment destinations.”

She emphasised the role of the GPF’s Entrepreneur Empowerment Property Fund (EEPF), which funded the 100% HDI‑owned project and supports emerging black developers with accessible finance, technical support and project preparation.

The development is already more than 80% occupied, reflecting strong demand.

Project co-owner Mpho Khorombi, who grew up in Katlehong, said the development represents dignity restored.

Backyard rooms were common where I grew up, often without dignity. Today, I’m proud to help change that in my own community,” he said.

Sebenzile Lofts demonstrates how targeted development finance, strong partnerships and community-centred planning can bring opportunity directly into township spaces. Together, the GPF, the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements and local developers continue to advance a shared vision: townships must be places where opportunity grows, not places people leave to find it.
