04 Nov Building Dreams, Shaping Futures: The Launch of GPF-Funded Student Accommodation Projects

On the 18th of October 2024, the Gauteng Partnership Fund officially launched two student accommodation projects in Johannesburg that seek to address student housing challenges in the province. The 57 on Bok in Doornfontein and the Residence Viera in Brixton delivered a combined 378 beds and are both ready to accommodate students flocking to Johannesburg for the 2025 academic year.

The two projects are near Wits University and the University of Johannesburg, providing a safe, accessible, and affordable way for students to focus on their studies and thrive—both academically and socially.

Second-year LLB student Nompumelelo Chiliza said she was looking forward to residence life in the new building, which has 24-hour security, a student manager who is always there for the students, and cleaning services three times a week. “The laundry facilities are always available, and the student transport that will take us daily to and from campus is a big bonus.”

The Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara indicated that all these projects aren’t just statistics; they represent a tangible solution to a long-standing issue that has impacted our education system, an investment in Gauteng’s future.

These initiatives are part of a larger plan to revitalise the inner city of Johannesburg. Craig Cornish, the chairperson of the GPF Board, explained that the organisation deemed these projects as flagship projects due to their location and impact. The developments were suitable for student accommodation, with easy access to academic institutions.

Lloyd Feshete, co-owner of Residence Viera shared that the GPF’s funding and support allowed for the completion of the project in record time.

Vuyo Myoli, co-owner of 57 on Bok said: “We are deeply grateful to the GPF for believing in us and providing us with the financial backing necessary to realise our dream.”
